Gizem Karaali - Teaching Before Pomona

At the University of California Santa Barbara (2004-2006):

I was a postdoctoral fellow at UCSB. My position entailed teaching four courses every academic year. Since UCSB runs on the quarter system, this meant that I would be teaching two courses each fall and one course in the winter and spring quarters. Below is a list of courses I taught:

  • Fall 2004: MATH 34A - Calculus for Social and Life Sciences - I (ran two lectures, total of 250 students overall)
  • Winter 2005: MATH 34B - Calculus for Social and Life Sciences - II
  • Spring 2005: MATH 117 - Methods of Analysis
  • Fall 2005: MATH 34B - Calculus for Social and Life Sciences - II
  • Fall 2005: MATH 108A - Introduction to Linear Algebra

    • At the University of California Berkeley (1997-2004):

    I was a graduate student at Berkeley. Therefore, most of my teaching there consisted of leading discussion sessions as a Graduate Student Instructor. For eight semesters, I was a GSI, running sessions for a variety of lower division courses including Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. For a couple terms I served as a Head GSI, which involved resolving enrollment problems for hundreds of lower division students each semester, along with the regular GSI duties. During the summers advanced GSIs were allowed to teach their own courses. Here are the courses I taught as the sole instructor:

  • Summer 2001: Math 1A - Calculus of a Single Variable I
  • Summer 2002: Math 54 - Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
